At first I thought they might just be reacting to a porn movie they had seen, but as the video continued, it was apparent that they were talking about a particular girl who was probably drunk and still on the premises.  I was very nearly gang-raped when I was on a college Biology weekend field trip.  I was spared because a 26-year old member of the class came back into camp and settled the drunks down.  But I have had panic attacks and lived with emotional scars that have diminished my life since then, now 40 years ago. You have to be kidding me. It is NOT the fault of schools that these disgusting excuse for humans behaved this way.  The fault lies firmly at the feet of these young men and their parents. I am willing to bet all I have that the “star” of this video has parents who have put him on a pedestal, made sure he feels far more important than all others, and have argued-whined-fussed his bad behavior away. I’ve taught kids like him many times before. He is too cool for rules, he’s desperate for attention from his peers, and believes that he is the funniest/smartest/best kid in the room at all times. Any attempt to correct poor behavior is met with resistance and excuses from mommy and daddy. The end result is a kid who has no respect for, empathy for, or compassion for anyone else. Thankfully for every a$$ like this one, I teach a dozen others who would have been the first to step up and help this girl. And, while I never want to blame the victim of such a crime, her poor choices (passing out drunk in a house full of boys) need to serve as a warning to others.

Removing religion you have not replace it with ANYTHING teaching good morale principles. Most parents don’t give a crap. Ok, I volunteer with a Rape Recovery Center on the Crisis Line. Lets get a few things straight. Having God in the classrooms isn’t going to make a difference in rapes happening. If that were so, we wouldn’t have any priest molestations. Second, I really hope justice is served and they learn their lesson, but I do not want them raped. Wanting them to be raped is anger and not Justice and it only furthers the problem. Third, what needs to happen is a look at why they did this. It isn’t because they’re evil and love Satan. It’s more likely because they don’t have respect for women, they have a power/ego complex, poor family and friend supports, and no activities to take them away from gangs and the gang mentality that follows. Mysogyny is evil and prevalent, but you don’t fight hate with hate and ignorant assumptions.

You can’t compare Catholicism to real Christianity. Jesus didn’t instruct us to not marry if we desired to serve Him. As a matter of fact, I believe we’re told that “it’s better to marry than to burn”, meaning you should marry before your lustful flesh gets the better of you. I grew up in a Christian family and we STUDIED the Bible, especially the Gospel. It’s sad that most Catholics simply memorize and don’t actually do critical thinking. 
It might benefit your perspective if you look at how much society has changed when we turned our back on God. We’re in this mess because those who didn’t want to follow rules or laws that had any connection to God thought it would be better to have an “all is good” philosophy.When did we ban prayer in schools? 1,000 years ago when most people were deeply religious and thumping their bibles, rape was much more common and prevalent, and there was often times nothing a woman could do about it.

I am surprised nobody commented on the rifle laying on the floor at 5:02 on the video…. can’t tell if it is a bb gun or a 22 but with this bunch it’s rather careless……it can be seen in the 6:20′s and at at 7:04 and while he’s sitting in the chair….. If I were his father and saw this video he’d be getting a long talking to and he would know if he is ever caught involved in something like this and is arrested he can expect to sit in jail. and the gun gets locked away till he is 21 and living on his own

As to the comments about who’s fault it is … the school system… the parents…. there is plenty of blame to go around first the parents…. do they even know what the Ten Commandments are? The kids won’t learn about them in school….. and parents the Bible says it’s your responsibility in training up you children… not the schools the problem is liberal socialism that has polluted our society takes that job from the parent and gives the training up to the schools….. who would rather hand out condoms and show young boys how to put one on a banana in sex ed… then tell them to keep it in their paints until they are married!  And now I will tell you we share the blame also!  Because we have allowed it…. Let them know if they do something that lands them in the grey bar hotel they can expect to stay there until their trial. It works I know my parents told me that in no uncertain terms…. Lastly have you taught your kids to think things through…. Given a certain situation if they do A will B be the consequence?

I guess the thing the stands out most to me is the fact that the parents and community were more concerned about their sports team, than a girl getting raped. Instead of finding out what happened, they choose to call the girl a liar and back their precious darlings. It’s simply amazing that this is the case. Make no mistake, this is not indicative of only some small town in Ohio.

On another note, there is nothing wrong with technology. There is something wrong with the way it is used. It is like saying guns kill people, they do not. Guns are a tool, as is technology, nothing more.

I heard some of the boys on the video who were NOT okay with the kid who was being recorded. Nor were they okay with the rape. They were upset and saying “it wasn’t right”, “it was rape”, & “what if it were your sister or daughter”.

The kid being recorded and his friend who was recording the video were drunk and behaving goofy by talking nonesense about a topic in which they didn’t fully appreciate the full gravity.
However, it didn’t appear he was trying to be malevolent or even that he was a part of the crime. I think he was freaked out a bit and trying to drink/laugh it off.

His behavior appeared to me to have been intoxication coupled with anxiety. As a teen, it’s very common to laugh and joke stupidly when scared or feeling helpless/lost/unsure in a situation that doesn’t fully seem real or possible.

Boys do act like this often (so do girls) and they always have. Joking about the girl who was drunk and passed out – and perhaps also taken advantage of – was common when I was a kid, too. 30 years ago… This isn’t new. It’s only new to them and the technology capturing it is new to us.

I find it hard to swallow those of you feigning shock and indignation and judging the kids as the devil, as if you had never encountered or taken part in something equally as bad when you were a kid. Were you all perfect angels as teens? Not one of you took advantage of a girl? Not one of you drank too much and went too far with a guy? Not one of you passed out or blacked out from excessive alcohol and did something terrible or something terrible was done to you? Not one of you joked with your friends about the “slut” who got plastered and passed out and supposedly did all sorts of sex acts or had them done to her? Not one of you? Sheesh. It was the norm when I was in HS and college. I remember when I was in high school (mid 80′s) this poor girl passed out at a party and the others at the party shaved her head, molested her while she was unconcious and then dumped her out on her parents’ front lawn in the very early hours. Why no one at the party tried to stop it or IF anyone tried – I don’t know as I wasn’t there. I just remember the kids joking about it and her shaved head. It can take just one person to be the voice of reason to stop such behavior but it’s how kids operate. Lord of the Flies mentality. It’s not new.  

Kids need to be taught how to be that voice of reason rather then being freaked out and acting like a dumbass on a video. My guess is if he had been taught the skill set to handle ugly realities that rape may not have taken place at all. He’s not evil – he is unprepared for adulthood. 

This stuff isn’t right, but it is and has been, quite common for a long time. Many kids just don’t fully realize how powerful their actions are to the world around them and to each other. They don’t realize they are impacting the world as an adult not as a child anymore. They don’t fully realize the consequences, until it’s too late.

In my honest opinion – it’s primarily the booze. It is always the booze behind this sort of thing.

Teenagers can’t handle liquor. Their brains aren’t fully developed and many don’t fully comprehend mortality, tragedy, empathy, crime/justice and the other higher functions/concepts which are the basis for morals and sound judgements. Add a little liquor and you have one hell of a mess.

These boys are not evil – they are extremely immature and intoxicated. Evil exists (Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Hillary’s hair stylist – all adults and evil even when sober). If evil is defined as every dumb sex obsessed giggly stupid talking teen boy who got drunk then “evil” isn’t “evil” anymore – it’s merely a part of the human developmental condition.

BTW – this video, if admissible, will be a damned great piece of evidence for the plaintiff. That goofy boy – that you all are vilifying as Ted Bundy - did her a favor if he was referring to her and what happened to her that night. There are names and vivid descriptions not only from him but from the other boys who were speaking in the video. So, perhaps this stupidity will become a tool of reconciliation and justice in the end.

The worst one on that video was the kid MAKING the video….he was the one who was egging on the “star” of the video. Making him repeat stuff to keep the sick conversation going and growing.  The way he laughed…a sort of sick adoration of the videomaker of the “star”.  THAT is the kid I would most worry about. Though they are ALL horrible and soulless.

I didn’t get the feeling these guys on the video committed the rape…just that he witnessed it and thought it was really amusing.  Sick little freak…and his friends are sick little ghouls.

What arena will Satan appear in next?  We need to become informed about who our judges are,  if we are going to influence the criminal system.  How do we do that? Can someone help?

As a teenager in a Catholic High School, this is a fairly exaggerated version of an everyday incident. No one has a real sense of gravity when it comes to morality in tragic events or the like, dead bay jokes and even 9/11 jokes can be heard when left to our own devices, I even realize that I’m desensitized to most stimuli, whether sexual, violent, etc.  My parents are certainly not at the root of my views- rather ohers’ influence and the reduced sense of appropriateness when anyone speaks about such things. I firmly believe in the freedom of speech, and that behavior trumps what you allow yourself to see, yet the result of idiots who are effected by various forms of media and speech are the culprit (and hey, don’t limit that to video games and movies, the games industry has it hard enough at the moment anyway lol)

This happened to me 30 years ago. It had nothing to do with violent movies, cellular devices, or violent video games. It was the crushing beginning impact of the demise of the family unit, and what is now referred to as “retro-America”. I was a young girl desperately seeking affection and approval from a male, My parents had divorced 4 years earlier. My father was not present, let alone being a protector of his daughters. My mother worked and went to college to become the provider.I thought “he” cared about me, but I was the vulnerable girl he chose for his going away party. He was alone when I arrived at his apartment (I had to get a ride there, yes). I thought it was beautiful, he went to the bathroom across the hall, then he instructed his buddies, who had arrived,  to start coming in… I will never forget the sorrowful horror of the walk of shame, as I was sobbing, through a hallway and living room of about 20+ young 18-24 year old men. I was the only female there. They thought it was hilarious. 
Being kind and helpful to young people, especially those in distress,  has been a passion of mine for many years now.

This is the worst example of adolescent male behavior I’ve seen. These “boys” need to go to real adult prison. There can’t be any reasonable explanation for what they did to that girl, and an example should be made of them and any others who repeat this kind of crime.

Boys learn how to respect/disrespect women from their fathers.

First this video was not in a class room, it was one of the boys’ homes.
Second this is town that only had the football team to be proud of so the put them on a pedestal then corrupted them. Putting them above reproach.

 Not they cannot do DNA of this case. She had no idea what had happened to her. One of the players was her ex-boyfriend. Another player convinced her to go to this party. They got her so drunk or drugged that she was unconscious. They carried her from home to home to different parties and violated her multiple times. When they (her parents) went to talk with prosecutors 2 days later, the prosecutor (who has a son on the team) dissuaded them from pursuing justice stating that it would be hard to prove and that the girls name would be drug through the mud. So nothing was done for two more days b/c city pd and prosecutors want to just sweep it under the rug….And please, for God’s sake let’s not blame the victim. No she should not have been there. Yes parents need to be more involved in their children. Yes, I’m sure she wishes she hadn’t gone, but she did.

 I am of the opinion that putting God back in school would not be a bad thing, but…. Just having a morning prayer or moment of silence, or teachers that are allowed to talk about their faith would not fix the mess we are in. When did it become the public school systems’ responsibility to teach manners, morals or compassion to our children. I for one want that job for myself. The teachers have their hands full with with disruptive behavior that cannot be punished. Daily kids coming to class in clothing more appropriate for the street corner, language that would make a sailor blush and parents that want to blame the teacher because Little Johnny isn’t getting good grades on his report card.
  I happen to be in a district with, by and large, exceptional people in the teaching positions, but they are not substitute parents.
  Parents both working, putting children in day-care at a very early age, no quality time spent with the most precious asset they have. 40 hour week, plus chores, plus some adult time. That’s for the go getters. Others just pawn the kids off on anyone that will take them as long as it doesn’t infringe on their good time. Give them anything to make them happy, so they aren’t bugging me. Let them watch anything, play anything and go anywhere. It’s the “Me-me-me” generation.

I also believe it’s important for parents and teachers to understand that it takes courage in this day and age to discipline a child. If we all wait around for someone else (government, whoever) to “give” us permission to discipline kids, we will fail in our efforts to produce people who fit in to society. We (you, me, parents, teachers, everyone) need to accept the role of someone who shapes our society. We can’t turn our heads and pretend it’s someone elses job to do it. We need to support people who are trying and let those who are letting their kids act like little gods know that’s not acceptable. Just my opinion, but I live it in real life.

Do you know for a fact that she passed out drunk?  Was she drugged?  Even if she did drink, were those boys ever told that when someone is unconscious it is rape?  I knew right from wrong by their age…from their video, it was clear that they had no empathy.  Teaching empathy is the responsibility of the parents. If I was their parent, and especially because they were boys, empathy would have been a top priority!  While school may not be  to blame, the way some athletes are treated may lead to self aggrandizement of immature males.  It truly sounds like the society around these boys enabled behavior that was poor and inappropriate. Couple that with their use of alcohol, and inhibition is gone.  This was a reprehensible act, I hope justice under the law to the fullest extent will be served.  I also hope that community turns around and supports her and the counseling she will need.

This case has been on going since Aug.2012, as a result of the Steubenville Police investigation that began when the mother of the alleged rape victim showed up at the department on Aug.14. Information was collected and from that information 2 boys were placed under arrest.

Everything was going accorrding to legal procudures until the New York Times came to town and wrote an 8 pages article about how the football program was to blame,then add Annoymous  promising to print the names ,addresses and social security numbers of people that (he) believes were involved. There is a miscarirage of justice and the federal government needs to protect these kids no matter how inmature they are. There was a terrible crime that happened it will come out in court,but Annoymous,
the NYTimes and  CNN are sisister.

i watched the whole thing and based on the context of how they were talking about the incident and the pronouns, and the reactions of the guys who didn’t think the jokes were funny or cool it seems highly unlikely that any of the ones in the video did the deed, though certainly not saying anything makes them complicit.
i would venture the majority here didn’t watch the video in the entirety and were probably too disgusted, understandable so, by the jokes to pick up on any details like that or have any reaction other than outrage.

Fine there’s only one door to heaven, it’s no business of the public schools to try and point people toward that door, it’s no business of government to push people toward that door, especially when you live in a country with lots of people who believe in many different doors being the only door to whatever wonderful afterlife they believe in.

My point on the rape in the 1950s is that this idea that things were much better then in some cases, or that having prayer in schools is a magic thing that improves this stuff or conversely the lack thereof makes it worse (plus there’s the problem of people needing to be ok with a muslim teacher leading their kids in islamic prayers or hindu etc, which they understandably wouldn’t).
I actually go to a fairly conservative (personally i’m libertarian) religious liberal arts university in the south, we’re all about critical thinking and writing.

Our country was founded on the Christian beliefs of our forefathers, and EVERYTHING they did, they did with God in mind. They were connected to God–HE was forefront in their private lives, God was forefront in their business lives, God was forefront in their public lives. They looked to God for establishing government, freedoms, laws, morals, moral guidance and principles. They talked about God, wrote about God, instructed their children about God, prayed to God openly in public and private. They had definites as to right and wrong. They came to THIS land for religious and other freedoms-to escape tyranny, as no doubt, immigrants in the centuries since, from all countries, have left their homelands for the same or similar reasons…and they have come here, because of what God did here. There are those whose desire is to systematically remove God from this country’s way of life in everything I have noted above. You have to be deaf, dumb, and blind NOT to see it. In doing the destruction that they already have, our society as a whole has suffered the grievous effects….this rape story has showcased that, yet again, the decline of America has come about by taking God out of the country He built. Where there is a souless, disconnected or disjointed society, where there are no definite rights or wrongs, where lawlessness and godlessness are accepted norms–a “do anything you want because you can” attitude prevails and society crumbles. No respect for anything or anybody…and certainly no attitude that there is accountability to God. Check your history…it repeats itself time and time again…and it has been said that those who don’t learn from their history, are doomed to repeat it. We don’t always see or hear what is relevant–thus, the tree thing. It illustrates how wise it is to consider that whether you have belief or firsthand knowledge of a certain thing, the laws of cause and effect are always in play, and the truth of any given thing is still the truth, whether you can experience it with your five senses or not. FAITH…the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

 Having respect for other people eliminates any worry of having people “push” their religion on me, or vice versa. There was a civility back in the 50s that there isn’t in this age now, and having a freedom in the public schools to mention God and allow students to have a quiet, reflecting time to pray in their custom was beneficial to all. The principle of honoring “God” and encouraging a relationship with “Him” was what was important–not what NAME you called Him. No, it is not the place of government or public schools to PUSH any kind of religion–nor is it their place to DENY American citizens their freedom of religion, or any other Constitutional freedom, in ANY way. Just to be clear–the primary purpose of government is to secure the sovereignty of our nation and protect our borders–which they AREN’T doing, by the way, but that is another discussion. As for the text examples you cite relating to our founders, I say that you should expand your horizons and actually read whole writings and texts and not just repeat what your professors are teaching you and texts that amount to hearsay–he said, she said about someone else. I would call that gossip, and it is unreliable at best. A person’s entire life and philosophy is not represented by several carefully chosen and pieced quotes made by themselves, or other people putting themselves in a position to speak for them. The partial story you want to portray is NOT the whole, and you are doing yourself a disservice by not checking things out for yourself–I think you will be very surprised if you took the time to do the research to fully develop the whole story. I may be generalizing the founders , but you are doing the opposite, and I stand by my assertion that the early settlers to our country had a united belief and faith in God first–and as always, when you put names: catholic, puritan, episcopal, etc to it, that causes humanistic division, and then we are not talking about God anymore, we are talking about religious sects. Yeah, that’s right–the founders DID intentionally not affiliate the new state with any religion–they were purposeful in the affiliation with God, the Creator, who created ALL people equal and with certain UNALIENABLE rights–a very general and all-encompassing premise that is ageless, timeless and limitless. I would say that the “enlightenment age” is not enlightenment at all…just a fabrication of man who thinks he knows better than God. The REAL truth is that God is the SAME…yesterday, today, forever…and His ways do not change with the fickleness of a society’s ideas of right and wrong and the wisdom it THINKS it has evolved to. Some things don’t need “enlightenment” or man’s “improvement.”

we have moments of silence in schools now, which is meant as an opportunity to reflect or pray if you wish.
I don’t study American history in school, I was a history buff when I was little, so I focus on things I knew next to nothing about like Asia and Africa and the Cold War (much bigger fan of Civil War, WWI, and revolutionary era history so I never read much on the Cold War prior).
Regardless my professors are actually good at their job and play devil’s advocate so nobody has any idea what they actually think, they just promote discussion and force you to defend anything you say.
Other than the nature of the founders religious beliefs i really don’t think we disagree on much in terms of prayer in school. You advocate a quiet time and most schools have one, my public high school did. People just don’t want government employees/teachers leading prayers.

I took a comparative religion class when I was in high school (we had priests and rabbis talk about their faith in class, and we visited a mosque as a field trip). As students we talked about God often, there were no restrictions as to the content of our own conversations. If you want to talk to a teacher about God that’s perfectly fine, they just can’t get up in front the class and talk about it while they’re on the clock unless it is relevant to the class, like comparative religion, or something in literature references the bible etc.
It would be wrong, horribly wrong, except that isn’t the case. Just like an atheist teacher can’t tell all the kids God isn’t real and stuff like that.
They went so far as to teach creationism in science class briefly, which whether it is accurate or not creationism is not science.
Its a good thing, it is more freedom if teachers, which are government employees and thus extensions of the government, are not allowed to use their position to promote any faith or lack thereof.

If this was your child, how would you handle this?

I grew up in Texas.  When we acted up in school, we got POPS and usually by a football coach who was teaching science or some other class.  We were embarrassed as we walked back in from the hallway and we NEVER did it again!

When we were kids, we “picked a switch” if we did something disrespectful.  We also knew our neighbors could discipline if we acted up.  I remember getting walked home by the ear when I was 9 by the lady behind us because I was trying to take the bullfrog out of her front water fountain.

The point is, I knew they cared.  Often, I would get sent to my room and told that I should sit there for awhile and think about what I did wrong then one of them or all would come in and they would listen to my explanation and what I learned.  I knew they cared because they took the time.  They took the time by trying to make me a better person.  They took the time because they would spend hours a week at my tennis lessons, matches, homework, camping, yard work… we did things together.

Where were these parents?  Where were their other family and neighbors and teachers, the church?  It takes more than just a family sometimes.  It takes a town who are on the same page and that’s having a good, moral and loving community. 

If every town in America had the above and add prayer and the pledge of allegiance back into school and the home, things would be greatly different in my opinion.
