(You took his comment out of context to what he was attempting to emphasize – the earlier “feeling” testimonies.) If you would have heard the entire testimony, Sen Harvey would have made you proud. He made it very clear why he could NOT support the bill (or any of the restrictive gun laws being pushed through the Colorado Democrat Congress). Sorry that you are only focusing on this one small segment of much that he had to say – he was in total support of women having the right to protect themselves. And was a staunch opponent of the bill – in fact the most vocal and staunch opponent!On the other hand, the Dem’s on the panel were disgusting. It was as if they had already made up their mind – and were taking marching orders from Obama/DC. The hearings were a charade. They usually did not even ask questions from those testifying in opposition to the bill. They did not need or want to know more. Yesterday was a very sad day in Colorado. I honestly cannot stop the tears. My heart goes out to Amanda Collins. She was raped – the ultimate violation on her body, mind and soul – and yet that horrible senator (who is a woman!) violated her once again by reducing her to a statistic. As a survivor of sexual assault (not rape, but my attacker broke into my home in the middle of the night and sexually assaulted me before getting spooked and running out), I cannot imagine what Amanda is feeling after this awful woman said all that to her. My attacker was never put behind bars because, even though I knew who he was, he left no fingerprints and because he never raped me, there was no DNA evidence to collect. Maybe if I had a gun and shot him in my home, the police would have had evidence against him. I know having a gun in my home now makes me feel more protected than I ever have in the past. It’s about responsible gun ownership and having the ability to protect yourself. It’s not about statistics. When the Democrats are successful in altering our Constitutiontal rights and take away our guns then we can revisit the statistics. I’m sure that rape and violent crime statistics will be off the charts high.

I can speak to this subject as a victim of rape.  I was attacked while asleep on my couch when I was 25 years old.  Like all victims of rape–except those in the movies–I was caught off guard.  I didn’t understand what was happening at first; I was scared and confused. Unless I had been cradling a gun under my head as I fell asleep watching TV, I can’t imagine how I would have had access to a gun.  I was raped just a few feet from the kitchen where I kept a prized collection of knives (I was an aspiring cook then) and I never even had a chance to think about grabbing one of the knives.  
I’m lucky that the monster who raped me didn’t have a gun, because when I faught back, all he was able to do was punch me, not shoot me.  

Personally, I would rather be murdered defending myself from rape than be raped, beaten and still possibly killed because I was unable to defend myself.

Attackers don’t target individuals that they think, maybe “carrying”! A campus that has a “concealed carry” policy, is a much safer campus than a “gun free zone” campus!  It is the same all over the Nation, that those villages, cities, and towns, that allow their citizens to exercise their Second Amendment right, have a lower crime rate, than those that impede law abiding citizens to their constitutional rights.
 If there are people that say they are in fear for their safety, from those that carry weapons, they are a misguided, and uneducated group of people. “We the people”, can not give up our constitutional rights, so the few can “feel” more comfortable.
 If in fact they were truly informed on the issue of the Second Amendment, and it’s intended conception, they would realize that the Second Amendment was constructed to protect us from tyranny, not criminals! Making laws that say you can’t carry guns won’t stop someone from getting a firearm to do evil. They made drugs illegal, and that’s worked so well at stopping drug trafficing. BTW, checked the stats lately on how well gun control is stopping murders in Chicago? How about stiffer sentences and tougher parole times. How about you get caught doing one of the public shootings, you get the death penalty, no appeals, just as soon as the paperwork is done and evidence proves it, you are gone? That might slow them down a bit. Get a clue political leaders, it’s a bad world and we need to protect ourselves. Yes, everyone has rights, but when you attack someone to rape or murder, you give up your rights. If you go predatory, be prepared to be killed in the process because you deserve it. We should recognize that what’s going on in the CO legislature (my state legislature) is a political exercise. It’s not a science lab, and is certainly not made up of honest mathematicians. The very same people would use statistics differently if they were talking about expanding gov’t. They would talk about the number of uninsured who are at risk of bankruptcy if a major medical emergency occurred. It’s a minority among the whole population (just as in Collins’s rape, Sen. Hudak said a gun would have stopped it in a minority of instances), but oh, we’ve got to “help” THOSE people! Even if there are a few percent among the population who are “disadvantaged” like people who want sex change operations, we the collective, must help them. Once they disarm women then they will turn to the men, saying that we have a monster inside us that wants to abuse women, and we must have civil institutions and education programs which will keep men away from women, except for those who have been properly “shaped” to their whims. Even the mechanism and motives of love will be challenged, as they have been (“Half of all marriages end in divorce”). 

The answer the Democrats have about women and guns is to try to convince us that most individuals use guns unwisely. Even if we try to use them for self defense it doesn’t work, because we get flustered and miss, or hit somebody else by accident, or in this case the assailant will use the gun against us. Logic is thrown out the window (If the assailant can take the gun away from me, why can’t I take it away from them as well?…) We only think we need guns for self defense because it’s our totem of self-assertion, but it doesn’t really work. In fact, self-assertion doesn’t really work (Interesting. The assailant is self-assertive…). I’d say Glenn is largely right, but what’s really going on is the people who see themselves as powerful are asserting the rightness of their will on those who see themselves as powerless, and those who see themselves as powerful but exercise self-restraint. Everything must be managed. If it can’t be managed, more resources need to be devoted to it, or it’s unimportant and should be ignored, because well, we don’t want to deal with it. As they grow their management state we’ll be seeing more of this.

Rather than learn from life, the progressives believe that reality can be shaped by a complete philosophy. I guess a lot of people believe that on the left and the right, though they argue things differently. Progressives latch on to factoids that support their case, and find a reason (usually moral, from their POV) to disregard others. In my experience when it comes to politics progressives tend to use statistics and evidence from science as props for their argument. They’re not interested in real knowledge, because that only confuses the issue in their mind.

One explanation I have for this, which may be giving these people too much credit, is Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy:
