This week, a polite, slightly awkward 19-year-old from Oklahoma graced televisions in millions of homes. Acoustic guitar in hand, Benjamin Glaze was ready to show the American Idol judges what he could do with his talent.

But before he could start his song, one of the judges asked him a personal question. Country singer Luke Bryan asked Ben if he had ever kissed a girl.

Ben said he had not. He explained, “I have never been in a relationship and I can’t kiss a girl without being in a relationship.”

Katy Perry, the most high-profile judge on this season of American Idol, immediately asked Ben to approach the judge’s table. She stuck her face towards him and teasingly requested, “One on the cheek?”

Everyone could tell Ben was embarrassed, but what do you do when Katy Perry asks you to kiss her on the cheek on national television? He begrudgingly gave her a peck.

Katy wasn’t satisfied. She asked for another. But this time, she tricked the lanky teenager and kissed him on the mouth.

“He wanted to save that kiss.”

She raised her arms in victory and everyone laughed. Ben laughed, too, in a feeble effort to play along.

Ben later told the New York Times he wanted to save that kiss for his first relationship. He said, “I know a lot of guys would be like, ‘Heck yeah!’ But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately. I wanted my first kiss to be special.”

What a beautiful message from an unexpected place.

It is amazing where you find wholesomeness and decency now.

Ben literally showed the world that young men still have values and principles. It just goes to show that there are still gentlemen out there. And that Katy Perry kissed a boy… and he didn’t like it.
