New Harvard poll shows millennials abandoning Obama & Obamacare

The Obama Administration may be trying to engage our nation’s young people with the #WHYouth initiative, but it looks like the so-called ‘millennial generation’ might actually be turning on President Obama and his policies… en masse.

According to a new study from Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, a majority of young voters (aged 18 to 29) actually support throwing Obama out of office. The video below highlights some of the study’s most eye opening findings:

Looking at ‘key trends’ between the years of 2009 and 2013, President Obama’s approval rating among millennials is at an all time low:

Perhaps more surprising, millennials are trending away from the Democratic Party:

Finally, younger Americans are not convinced Obamacare will actually lower cost or provide a better alternative:

“That is remarkable. Are you hearing that anywhere? Have you heard that anywhere,” Glenn asked on radio this morning. “Now, what happens when the President loses the youth? What happens to the Democratic Party? They are all in on this. All in. So what happens? And how is this possibly going to change?”

  • landofaahs

Gen Y, Gen X, now Gen screwed. You voted for the little Trojan horse muslim and America hater.

Finally, they are turning against Obamacare.

Its far past time, and I imagine most of them are learning that Socialism by Obama, as with any such leader of a bankrupt ideology, is little more than a liar, thief, and despot bent on the annihilation of America as a Republic.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8FvmesaxXg Sam Fisher

Well it looks like even my generation can see though Obama’s lies. Man liberals are so screwed.

Nothing shocking here. The premium rate shock from Obamacare has forced the freeloaders into become the economically exploited. It’s easy to be a Leftist and spend someone else’s money. It’s difficult however, for a Socialist to realize they’ve been full of crap all along, and then admit to it.

This is why Obama and the Dumbocrats are desperate to pass immigration reform. They need to replace this demographic with the Illegal Vote.

  • Anonymous

Well, sure, it is widely reported now that they are to shoulder all the costs for Obamacare. Even the Administration does not deny the 20 year Young and Healthy have to be forced to pay to keep Obamacare from collapsing. What Obama forgot was this group could care the less and will not sign up. They will just pay the penalty. Does anyone think if Obamacare was Cartercare that the Choom Gang would have signed up? Yeah.

Obama is commanding the young folks pay for his crappy healthcare law that offers no healthcare, just debt, high taxes, and death!

  • Jordan Baines

This is the part where I just shrug and say that the math indicates my generation would have still provided enough lift to the president to have elected him over Romney in 2012. And then I might as well point out the rest of the study shows broad millenial support for raising taxes on the super-wealthy, a fear of student debt that is oriented toward universities more than it is toward politicians, and a complete lack of sureness about how to feel with regard to Snowden.

To be honest, it kinda feels like this story is being taken out of context and blown out of proportion.

  • Anonymous

Statistics, statistics. All you have to do is listen to what the youth is saying and make your own conclusions. Listen to the people and you’ll find that a vast MAJORITY are against this mess called Obamacare.

  • Anonymous

What context is this story being taken out of, i.e., what is the bigger picture in your mind? Not sure from your statement who you voted for. ACA is ill-conceived and is a giant source of broken promises. People are waking up to this. I’ve known all along that a single-payer health system is a completely utopian and irresponsible idea. I picked up some books and read them to learn this. It’s quite simple.
Millions of individual plans cancelled already. Thousands of new enrollees. You do the math.

  • demonichate

hey sam, just thought i would say hi i have seen you on Zonations website and was surprised ( though i guess i shouldn’t have been) to see you here.

  • Jordan Baines

Out of context of the study. I’m just referencing the source material for this article.

The study doesn’t seem to show “abandoning” of policy as a critical component of the methodology, analysis, or conclusion. It does, however, show an interesting snapshot into the perception of the future of the ACA, as well as a smaller gap in perception of ACA vs. the nickname Obamacare than previous surveys had shown. It does show a broad positive feeling for the “Buffett Rule” as a path forward in tax revenue generation, which is (again) not an indicator of specific policy choices they would ask for, just an affinity.

As for single-payer, which ACA isn’t, it’s part of why our friendly Nothern neighbors have cheap pharmaceuticals/medical care and similar health outcomes and life expectancy to ours. Which books told you single-payer wouldn’t work? I’m an avid reader myself. :)

  • Neal Aubrey

its then not ironic that the president has been trying to work with the youth lately with the white house youth summit and what not..

Try these two books: “Fool Me Twice. Obama’s shocking new plans for the next four years exposed.” By Aaron Klein and Brenda J. Elliott. “Revolt! How to defeat Obama and repeal his socialist programs.” By Dick Morris and Eileen McGann.
I don’t know why you changed the subject to talk about taxing the rich. It has nothing to do with young people’s opinions of ACA.
The numbers clearly show that many young people are trending toward opposition of the ACA. You are either able to grasp that or you aren’t able to grasp that. No skin off my back. Single-payer? Explain to me how complete government control of the health care system (which is what is happening slowly but surely, can’t be denied) isn’t single-payer? Perhaps you can discuss that with one of our friendly northern neighbors. Canadians are coming in droves to the United States for complicated surgeries. Socialized medicine can provide coverage for a lot of people, but it can’t provide better health care. In essence, private insurance is the only source of financial incentive for doctors. If you put too many people on Medicare and subsidize them, doctors will retire early, attempt to enter into a more lucrative private practice, or just find a new line of work. They are human. They work for money like the rest of us. As long as Canadians have OUR health care system as a safety net, of course they can maintain a decent level of life expectancy. Canada has nothing even close to the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota or St. Jude’s in Memphis. They never will either.

  • Jo-bleaux

The pole left out the Libertarian Party (or any other party) as an option?

  • buckybone

My generation isn’t just going to the Republican Party either, which might just be a more significant development.

  • buckybone

“No party affiliation” would be the only third option that would register above the margin of error, which is probably where most of those ex-Dems are going.

  • Jordan Baines

Good books to read. I’ll see what I can dig up.

Anyway, I’m not changing the subject. The link in the article goes to the Harvard study being quoted, and taxes/student loans are as much of the survey results as policy and party issues.

As for single payer, the ACA includes insurance companies as part of a marketplace of “payers” for medical care. This contrasts with what’s being done in the UK and Canada, where the government is the single payer on behalf of their citizens. As for life expectancy and health outcomes in those countries, they are a bit better than they are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy

I mean, I recall the news going nuts over seniors and others going up to Canada to buy their meds because they are much cheaper up there. True, Canada doesn’t have the Mayo Clinic, but they live longer. Maybe the cold preserves them?

Listen, I’m not saying the millenial generation isn’t losing a bit of faith in the party they voted for in the last two elections, but I’m suggesting that the study doesn’t a) prove an entire generation is “abandoning” this president or a policy that isn’t even in full swing yet, and b) there’s a lot more in that study that what’s being used for this article.

Let me lay it out for you. We keep hearing that over 5 million people have lost what amounted to an individual health insurance plan. Obamacare standards made the terms of their plan illegal/obsolete. They couldn’t keep the health care plan that they were perfectly fine with. There are over 90 million people on employer provided health plans. When the mandate goes to businesses, they will drop people from their plans. Do you know why? Because a business owner can do whatever the hell he/she wants to with their own business/property. We both know that many of these 90 million people will probably be subsidized by the government through Medicare at that point. Obama will demonize the businesses for doing what any rational person would expect them to, drop the plans to maintain their profit line. Once that many people get on the exchanges, private insurance won’t be able to compete with the government. Since Obamacare has never been supported by a majority in the House, i.e. it’s completely unconstitutional (no matter what John Roberts says, the commerce clause is what it is), there is no reason that Obama won’t sidestep Congress in order to raise some form of tax to keep it going. He’ll do it just watch. Private insurance simply won’t be able to sustain itself. It will be a forgotten concept within 5 years. It can’t compete in the marketplace because there will be no marketplace. There will be nothing but the exchange, hence single payer. By the way, I can tell when somebody is googling their way through a thread.

No its not ironic, The Democrats know they are loosing. Obama is out on more Rock Star Tours to College Universities for this problem. He is going to go out and sell himself to them like a used car salesman. Will they buy another Obama Vega with a new paint job?

  • Anonymous

Yep, as long as the Republicans keep people like John McCain around, they can kiss Conservative votes good bye.

  • Jordan Baines

I don’t think you give enough credit to businesses. Despite unemployment numbers, there’s still extremely high demand for folks in tech (for example) with specialized skill sets, and company sponsored or subsidized health care is an integral part of most offers from larger organizations, along with 401K matching, vacation plans, etc.

I also don’t think you give enough credit to the capacity of organizations to use large customer pools as a method for negotiating lower cost services and sourcing. Granted, the federal government tends to be inept in these sorts of negotiations when compared to an organization like Walmart, but I see that as more an example of corruption and kick-backs (think of how much we overspend for military products we don’t use or could get at a hardware store for considerably cheaper).

ACA passed the House. I mean, if we’re talking about constitutionality, the bare minimum of the civic process was met prior to the President executing the bill. Regardless of whether anyone in the House votes for anything else associated with the current administration, it passed. For that matter, the same Justices who voted for continued second amendment protections and citizens united are the folks who saw fit to allow most of ACA to be enforced. I mean, we’re all going to find something in what they do disagreeable, but they are the folks the constitution and Marbury v. Madison hold accountable to arbitrate constitutionality. It’s like an umpire calling a strike. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the zone. It’s a strike because the ump called it a strike, except that the Supreme Court does have the opportunity to overturn their decisions at a later time.

As for the President having the chance to convert ACA to single payer before the end of his term or raise additional tax revenues, I highly doubt he’ll be able to get anything like that passed through the current House. I mean, the House holds firm against him in everything, don’t they? It’ll be someone else who sees the end of the healthcare system come to fruition during their term, even on the 5 year timeline you set out.

And really? What’s wrong with Googling a link for life expectancy? I’m not the kind of person who knows off the top of their head that it’s 82 for Canada, 81 for the UK, and 79 for us. I figured you would appreciate that I have the good sense to do some research before making that sort of claim.

  • Jim

Why do they need Obamacare? They can stay on their parents insurance til they’re 26.

  • Max Wellbrock-Talley

First, I’ll remind that the youth very rarely vote and aren’t big campaign donors. Next, I’ll point out that many young people are abandoning Democrats because they lean further Left and perceive Obama as not doing enough for young people. Notice how in the past year Democratic identification has declined but Republican identification has held constant? Given the Left lean of younger people made evident by the graph, I posit that it is clear that either the youth has simply become more apathetic, it has left to support the Greens or Libertarians, and/or it has become more Independent, which doesn’t really carry much meaning in how one votes.

  • Jennifer Guthrie Packard

don’t think for one minute that SMALL businesses won’t do exactly what “bert30″ describes! they won’t have a choice. and it sounds as if you are ignoring the fact that it is ALREADY happening… everyday, people are being laid off, having their hours cut and/or losing their private coverage. ALREADY. FACT! and also don’t think for one minute that obama will hesitate to illegally pass the tax (or anything else he wants) without the necessary backing from the house and/or senate. he’s ALREADY done it…he’ll do it again. i think you are trying to read more into this than was intended. the numbers show a trend and it can’t be ignored. i, for one, am finally starting to have a small glimmer of hope!

  • Scott Sherri Kaeck

SO what do we have to do to start the recall vote, him and the rest of the demwits not only forced this obumer care on the American people but they bald faced lied to us in the process!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

These youth may be abandoning Obama but they’re not abandoning progressiveism. The dream of permissiveness will continue. They will simply flock to another leader of broken promises and lies. A leader who will offer the world but only deliver misery.

  • Anonymous

I’m giving all of the credit in the world to businesses here. They are who provide jobs. Barack Obama has provided less than zero full time jobs. He’s created a ton of part time ones though. That’s his goal, work ten less hours per week and the government pays the bills that your other ten hours would have provided for.
Marbury vs. Madison doesn’t overrule the House’s right to defund anything whatsoever. The Supreme Court can’t run unfettered, the same as the President can’t, the same as the Senate can’t, and ultimately, the only reason the House exists. You can’t take money away from the American people unless they give you permission. But…you got your way Socialist. You got your law because the Republicans spurned their own visionaries (Mike Lee, Ted Cruz) and decided that the rule of law wasn’t imporant anymore. Checks and balances don’t matter anymore. Promises don’t matter anymore (“If you like your plan you can keep it”). I oppose this law because I don’t want YOU OR ME to get ran over by it. We will though.

I thought that Obamacare and ACA were the same, am I mistaken? I am so thinkful that the young people have opened their eyes. Maybe with eyes wide open, they can see where obama is taking us and this country. We need to take a stand!!! Get out and VOTE!!

The youth will sell their birthright like Esau for a bowl of soup. Obama will buy them off with student loan debt forgiveness and the youth will fall for it because they are too stupid to realize the debt of it will be paid by the taxpayer, which is them because we will pass that off to them also.

June, the only thing these over educated, under thinking dolts woke up to is the fact that somebody else won’t be payin’ their freight. They voted for “fairness” and thought that Barky meant them, not the parasites they’ll be paying for.

I’m glad it’s hurting them: student loans, no jobs, expensive, useless “insurance” without real “health care”, redistribution of their future and mounds of “porkulus” debt to pay off. Maybe this will teach these smug, brilliant Utopians that there’s consequences to every decision and to think twice before pulling that voting booth leaver.

School of Hard Knocks teaches responsibility, Harvard…not so much..

As an 18 year old 80% of people in my age group are libertarians. Ron Paul was who we wished we’d been able to vote for, and about 35/40% of my friends, have parents who are 100% liberal or just vote democrat because they always have. As a business owner, and yes i mean business owner. I am already starting to feel the burden of taxes. The burden of being an adult. Are you telling me that Obama is making this burden bigger? God forbid my generation start to care about being successful in life.

Honestly I myself have been dumbfounded by the lack of intelligence when it comes my liberal relatives and friends. Did anyone tell them Abraham Lincoln was a Republican? Did anyone let them know that James Buchanan, Franklyn Pierce, John Tyler, and Andrew Johnson (all horrifically terrible presidents in their own manner) were Democrats?

In the case of politics today, Nixon would not have been considered a crook, and he would never have resigned. (That is, if he were a democrat)

  • micah

I have 8 other siblings, the obamacare burden is going to destroy my lower-middle-class family. We hardly have money to prepare for such a mess.

  • micah

Trust me, a lot of the youth, even the ones who enjoy being part of anonymous and touting their ‘h4x0rz sk1llz’ are redefining their tone. I doubt they even knew what progressivism’s origins were until the occupy movement was over.
