Worse Than Weinstein? 200+ Women Accuse Director of Sexual Harassment in Latest Hollywood Bombshell

What happened?

Director and writer James Toback, 72, has been accused of sexual harassment and assault by dozens, possibly hundreds, of women over a period that goes back to the 1980s.

Many of the women said that he would pretend to be interviewing or auditioning them, then ask them explicit questions about their sex lives and end up pleasuring himself in front of them, groping them and even ejaculating onto their bodies, according to the report.

How many women have come forward?

In the initial report in the Los Angeles Times earlier this week, 38 women had allegations against Toback, with 31 of them speaking on the record. Since the story was published, the L.A. Times reports that more than 200 more women have contacted them with stories.

While most of the allegation stories have not yet been verified, the Los Angeles Police Department has also received “numerous” phone calls related to Toback since the story broke.

If you’re losing count, you’re not alone …

These accusations are only the latest bombshell report to hit Hollywood in recent weeks. The entertainment industry is still contending with allegations that Harvey Weinstein harassed and assaulted actresses during his long career as a producer, often using the pretext of a party or an audition to get them alone.

GLENN: You can run, but you cannot hide. This was the maniacal threat that echoed through her body and sent her adrenaline into overdrive. She was running as fast as she could, but he was still trailing her in his town car. You can run, but you can't hide.

These were the words that an aspiring actress heard, Stephanie Kearns. She will always remember that that night that the filmmaker, James Toback, assaulted her in Central Park. He's the guy who did the movie Bugsy and The Pickup Artist and some others. She said it was like a horror movie.

Unfortunately, Kerns' experience with Toback is shared by hundreds. You heard right. Hundreds of women, according to a new bombshell investigative report by the LA Times. Today Show anchor Natalie Morales and veteran actress Julianne Moore have spoken up about their creepy encounters with Toback. The majority of the accounts are not verified yet. But most of the women accusing the filmmaker of misconduct follow a similar script. He approaches them on the streets in Manhattan. He offers them a part in an upcoming movie. And then he makes unwanted sexual advances on them. Now, Toback is 72. He denies these allegations entirely. Hundreds of women. He claims that it was biologically impossible for him to engage in the behavior described by his accusers for the last two decades. Whether this is true or not, time will tell.

Here's the thing: There has always been creeps, and there will always be creeps, in the movie business, outside of the movie business. And they're ready to take advantage of women and leverage power over them.

But Hollywood is learning a hard lesson right now, in light of Harvey Weinstein. This kind of behavior cannot be enabled or dismissed. The degradation of women in the film industry is unacceptable. And Hollywood's silence for the past few decades will not soon be forgotten or forgiven.
