Here’s What You Need to Know About NSC Plans for a ‘Nationalized 5G Network’

Following the weekend’s bombshell report by Axios, which suggested a Trump administration proposal to create a government-controlled national 5G network in order to counter spying by the Chinese, numerous White House officials have spoken up to assure us that the government has no such plans … at least, not yet.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made the following comment in press briefing:

“Look, as we outlined in our National Security Strategy … we discussed the need for a secure network.  Right now, we’re in the very earliest stages of the conversation.  There are absolutely no decisions made on what that would look like, what role anyone would play in it; simply, the need for a secure network.  And that is the only part of this conversation that we’re up to right now.”

“Crisis creates opportunity”

The National Security Council’s (NSC) original proposal for the US government to build and own the 5G infrastructure is not likely to gain much traction, but it does raise some legitimate concerns worth paying attention to.

“The top motivation driving this [is] fear … the justification for taking this extreme measure was pointed directly at China,” explained Glenn at the chalkboard today. “Crisis creates opportunity. The government is using that opportunity once again to stage an invasion on an industry that has made more technological breakthroughs in the past 20 years, specifically due to its competitive nature.”
